Lohri is a popular Punjabi folk festival that is mostly celebrated in Northern India in the winter. Legends and historical accounts both attribute the origins of the Lohri celebration to the Punjab area. The winter solstice has officially passed, according to popular belief. Lohri is a festival celebrated by people in the northern part of the Indian subcontinent to celebrate the end of winter and the return of the sun to the northern hemisphere.
Lighting bonfires, enjoying festive food, dancing, and collecting presents are all part of the holiday celebration. Households who have just celebrated a wedding or the birth of a child will go all out for Lohri. Special Lohri songs are sung during the Lohri festivities.
With the purpose of giving it some color Wishing Pond has compiled an amazing gallery of photographs celebrating Lohri, the festival of lights.
